Personally, I wouldn't pay to have a pool put in. I did get a pool with the house when I bought it so that's why I know I wouldn't spend the extra money to install one but it has been nice to have but not used as much as it should.
The first years we had a lot of fun, and friends and neighbors were over using it a lot but the last summer it was only me (teaching the neighbor son to swim) that was using it and still it was not that many days out of the whole summer.
But we sure have had some cool partys at the tiki bar
Yes, if you are a big family with kids it might be worth it but then again you add a risk factor with drowning so both adults have to be in agreement before the installation.
It doesn't add or detract any value to the house and it might even be more difficult to sell at some point since the group of people looking for a house with pool is smaller and it is a group of buyers that refuse to buy a house with a pool.
Can you do anything of the work yourself or do you need to hire people for the whole project.
A plumber friend of mine built a pool a couple of years ago and did all the plumbing himself. It still cost him about $15,000.00 for the rest of the work.
Also, if you don't want to do the maintenance yourself you need to add about $40.00 per month in upkeep for the pool person. Plus the extra power bill for circulation pumps and gas bill for heating.
