they are expensive to install and own. Not worth debt, IMHO, because you won't get a penny back on the investment. Realtors I know tell me people buying a house might view the pool as a bonus, but not be willing to pay more for it, or it actually detracts from the value because many buyers don't want one. This varies by where you live, though, so YMMV.
I have 2 neighbors with pools. Both have had them for years, now never use them. One is going to be filled in, the other just sits there. Guy who owns it says it's a PITA to have around. They liked the pools when the kids were small, but after the kids moved up and out the pools were never used. Another neighbor had one, sold the house. The buyer filled in the pool, not wanting to deal with it, as it needed a major cash infusion.
OTOH, another neighbor is putting one in, but he has more money than he knows what to do with.
