I've rented 3 of them, 2 in FL and one in CA (had it for a week) and thought they were decent cars, if a tad underpowered. The ones I rented were OK for fit and finish, given the price of the car, and drove well. Ergonomics are not ideal, but Pontiacs are not good on ergos anyway, IMO. OTOH, even the seats were good, which I cannot say about the current Malibu.
I spent 4 days in PA with a Malibu (the sedan, not the Maxx) and except for the seats which leave a lot to be desired, was still surprised to find it a decent car with good road manners and happy at 80-85 mph.
The GM cars that I can't stand are the Cobalt and that dorky retro wagon (can't remember the model) neither of which are designed for anyone over 5'4".
I think GM is at least trying to do some good stuff and battling bean counters every step of the way.
Remember, those of us who've had Saabs for a long time are a lot pickier than the average buyer of a mainstream GM car. And having also rented Toyotas, Fords, Subys, Chryslers, and Nissans I don't see nearly as big a difference between mid-level Japanese and domestic cars as was obvious a few years back (but I don't like Chrylser products). And FWIW, except for one beater truck, I've never owned a GM product. I sure don't consider my two 9000s to be GM.
