Seriously! Saabs are overall very inexpensive to maintain in my experience... I've not found much that regularly breaks that requires any sort of major cash outlay. The XR, on the other hand, has a ton of very hard to source parts, and even the stuff that's very American (engine, transmission, etc.) isn't all that cheap from the dealer. One nice thing, though, is being able to walk into an Autozone and buy off the shelf stuff for SVOs/Thunderbirds/etc. at very low prices... The upgrade to the Mustang brakes is a HUGE cost saver - rebuilt front calipers set me back a whopping $40/ea, the rotors were $32ea, and the pads $12. This is not trivial stuff, either - these are big, dual-piston calipers and 12" vented rotors...
As far as engine swaps - I gotta ask *why*? The 2.3 turbo will make 300hp with bolt ons using the stock cast iron 8v head. That is not something you can do with any Saab engine! I'm sure in the end DOHC is a nice detail and maybe ultimately good for more power, but there is *so* much knowledge about the 2.3 turbo I really can't see moving away from it ever. I know of at least a few 400+ whp XR4Tis, and I'm sure there are even more high ouput SVO Mustangs and TurboCoupes floating around... not to mention TurboRangers, Pintos, and every other foxbody car! :)
If you haven't, you should head over to the Merkur owner's BBS or MerkurSport - good people with good info!
