The main problem was you changed all the water at once. You only need to ONLY ever change 1/3 maximum every two weeks and never change it all!! The reason? The water becomes "conditioned" with good bacteria that actually is part of a cycle that feeds on the fish waste and turns it into a less toxic substance than the first step of ammonia called Nitrite; and then eventually Nitrate. Also never clean the filter sponge under tap water as this kills of the good bacteria, but use old tank water in a bucket.
Check this link for a good write about the cycling process: http://www.worldcichlids.com/faqs/cycling.html
Also the temperature shock may have contributed to the deaths too. Just use water straight from the tap at room temp. Never used boiled water froma kettle as there may be metals in it. Always condition the water with a product like AquaPlus to get rid of any chlorine/chloramines in the water.
FYI I keep two tanks at at home. A 4 foot African Cichlid tank with about 30 fish and a 3 foot varied plants and tropical fish tank (see below pic).
Do a search for keeping fish! It is a very rewarding hobby!
hope that helps!
Steve
