I have a small pond in the backyard that is only 12" deep. They come into the house for the winter, and I keep them in first a 20, now a 30gal aquarium. I've kept as many as 39 in the 30gal, 29 in the 20gal. I've lost a few, like 3 or 4 to jumping out of the uncovered, and likely too full aquarium, and probably 1 per year of unknown causes. Just went belly up.

Goldfish are hardy. I only feed them once a week or so. They will grow to fill whatever size container they are in. Mine don't grow a lot in the winter, but do put on some size in the pond. They will take temps from near freezing to 90f.

I use a Whisper filter unit on the back of the tank. Now using a double filter which is a model 3 or 300 or something like that. It runs almost all the time the fish are inside, and keeps things fairly clean for goldfish.

I'm no expert, but do remember reading that having gravel and filters is important in maintaining the bacteria that break down the poop and amonia they generate. I change a few gallons at a time when the plants need watering. I replace it with the water I caught when the shower was warming up and let it come to room temp. Every few weeks I need to take a green scotch pad over the glass to clean up the algae growing on the tank and filter.

The biggest shock they get is the transfer from pond to aquarium and back. Still, I try to let the water come to the same temp and generally avoid shocks to the system of the fish.

You should be able to handle 5 small to med goldfish in a 10gal tank with or without a filter/areator. Throw them some food a couple of times a week, and they'll be happy.
