Yup, they were killed off by one or several of the reasons already mentioned. As an added note five goldfish, even small ones, are too many for a ten-gallon tank (they grow fast). Goldfish are notorious for creating a lot of waste as compared to typical tropical species of similar size, so need comparatively more room and more frequent--but smallish--water changes. A good-size external filter is a big help, and will also create a current that's good for the fish (the carp that goldfish are descended from are river fish).
Try keeping two or three fish in that tank. Feed them a *small* amount of food two or three times/day and change perhaps two gallons of water/week. "Vacuum" the gravel at the same time as the water change (simple devices are available at fish shops). Replace with water that's within a couple degrees of the tank water and use a dechlorinator before adding it. There should never be a reason to completely empty and clean the tank and its contents. I've got a couple of aquariums that have never been dismantled in fifteen years.
Do these things and the goldfish can live for decades!
