If the conduit for the house wiring is metal, the system is grounded through the conduit. On the adapter, there should either be a ground wire or a grounding tab. In theory, this wire or tab should be connected at the outlet face plate screw thus grounding the adapter.
My house was built in '46 and the original outlets were also non-grounded. It's a simple job to change an outlet to provide ground as long as the conduit is metal, which it probably is - either rigid pipe conduit or flex metal conduit - you can see the conduit at the service panel. With modern grounded outlets, ground is typically provided by the the two screws securing the outlet to the box. If in doubt, a green ground wire can attached between the grounding terminal on the new grounded outlet and the outlet box using a sheet metal screw.
