I guess it's somewhat like the volkswagen beetle. It looked about the same for many years, had some minor cosmetic updates, minor engine differences, and the owners by and large loved them. I think the 900 series and the 9000 series are similar to that, although the numbers are smaller to be sure!
Find a 1987 900 Convertible, and the 1994 (last year) looks the same with about three differences. Same with 1987 3 or four door and the 1993 (last year). The steering wheel has an airbag, the wrap on the spoiler is a little farther around, and there may be different wheels. Same engine and same transmission if you get the turbo 5 speed, in any of those configurations!
Find a 1994 9000 Aero, and the 1997 9000 Aero will have the same engine and the same transmission (whether 5 speed or automatic). It's the 2.3 turbo engine with T5 engine management. Older 9000's could also have the 2.3, but with a different management system. The 9-5 has a 2.3 too, just yet another newer management system, the T7. Very similar power specs on both, the 9-5 has independent rear suspension and can have a built in GPS system, the 9000 has solid axle and no GPS. Oh, the 9-5 is a four door with a trunk, the 9000 can be a 4door with trunk or a 4door with hatch depending upon model. The 9K has at most dual airbags. The 9-5 has more.
Initial purchase price, safety features, safety record of the car, depreciation, insurance costs, registration costs, repair costs, and availablity of parts and user community. All things to consider.
Dated looks? I think not. The back end of a Saab that just kicked your butt always looks the same... faster than you...
