The 9-5 is still a current Saab model and though there have been two mid cycle enhancements, it's still all the same car. 8 model years is barely middle age in Saab model years.
And a 9-5 is a thoroughly modern state of the art car as far as luxury and performance, though some of competition have superior electronic gadgets/features in the last few years, the 9-5 has superior chassis dynamics and an old world Saab charm and uniqueness born from jets and Swedish design that more than compensates. And a 9-5 has gadgets, like vented seats, unique in the price range. I've ridden in current $80k S class Benzes that don't have heated seats or park assist for example.
Even without side-curtain airbags the safety of a 9-5, which does have side head impact airbags, just not the curtain type, anyway the safety of a 9-5 is very enviable with a proven crash test and accident history.
Despite what your read on this problems solving BB a 9-5 is endorsed by many folks for it's reliability and is arguably the most reliable Saab ever and superior to many Japanese brands.
I find a 9-5 to be every bit as unique as a 9-3, just state of the art, chassis, luxury (try the Harmon Kardon) and performance (try the Aero) wise, with only less than a foot in length seperating the two cars. If it were many other manufaturers who cater more to the American market, a 9-5 woulda' been the new generation of 9-3 having hiccuped a little in size with each upgrade.
I find the 9-5 SportWagon, or SportCombi now, to be the ultimate hatchback with none of the awkwardness, see the C pillar, of 5 door OG9-3s. A 9-5 SportWagon is one slick, sporty looking car, the "fast back" of wagons, not the "square back" like other wagons. For me a 9-3 hatchback is kinda' a half baked SportWagon. The 9-3 floor doesn't go flat, there's not a lotta neat storage bins, no cargo tracks, the cargo cover isn't as nice or easy to remove, the visibility isn't as good, the liftover isn't as low, well I could go on...
