It's called the RER, pretty sure it's line B, it runs like the subway but has fewer stops because it's a train. I've read it's the number one favorite place for pickpockets to play their trade since they know it's full of tourists.
Keep a close eye on the time, 12 hours may seem like a lot but when you factor in the to-ing and fro-ing from CDG and what have to be interminable security lines these days, you could have a lot less time than you think.
I recommend the Rick Steves books, if you've ever seen him on PBS he's a world class geek but he's been doing travels in Europe for 25 years and he knows his shat. I've used his work successfully in France and Italy. Check him out at a bookstore, he probably has a "what to do if you're in Paris one day" section. If he doesn't, Fodors and Frommers will.
