Why do people ignore well intended advice? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 22 Jan 2007 16:54:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just got back from the discount auto parts store where I picked up oil, Techron, and new plugs for my 2000 9-5. As I was approaching the cashier I overheard a guy at the anti-freeze display ask a salesclerk which anti-freeze he needed for his Saab?
I asked him which year vehicle he owned and advised him to buy the Dex-Cool for his 2005 Saab, as my 2000 model required something different.
So there he is: with a 50 year old advanced degreee mechanical engineer, who works in the automotive industry, who owns two Saabs, who does all his own maintenance, and who has had trouble-free ownership for 189,000 miles on the older of the two cars, instructing him to buy the Dex-Cool product.
He also has a 19 year-old, pimply-faced salesclerk (no offense intended as I was once one too) who works at a discount auto parts store, and doesn't know what a Saab is, instructing him to buy a Universal Coolant.
Who does he listen to? You guessed it!
For his sake I hope the Universal Coolant is truly as compatible with all other coolants as the label indicates.
If he had asked what oil filter to buy he would have certainly thought I was nuts. The Motorcraft FL400S (just ignore the fact it says Ford on the label and that it is twice as big as the A/C Delco PF-53 or Saab filter) is nearly as good as the Mobil 1 #209 at only 1/3 the cost.
