I have this bad habit of eavesdropping on the conversations of people in stores if they are buying something I know about. If I can be helpful I will chime in with my advice and provide the rationale for my input.
No matter what the products may be, I find that VERY few people listen to advice from someone who is obviously knowledgeable and either listen to a clueless retail store drone or make a decision by reading the back of a package.
Things like oil and coolant are great examples because you can't tell much about them without some knowledge and the copy on the packaging is intended to urge you to buy. The average person hasn't a corner of a clue that cheap oil is not as good as the more expensive stuff or that there actually might be a reason why one coolant would be better for your car than another. And if something is cheaper and the teenage clerk says it's OK then it must be good, right? (Cheaper being the operative word)
