There are two different sizes of widescreen movies. 2.35:1 & 1.85:1 A 16:9 widescreen TV displays at the 1.85:1 size (actually it divides out to 1.78:1)
If you watch a movie/tv show that is produced at the 1.85:1 size, it will fill the entire screen. If the movie is produced at the 2.35:1 size, you will still see that black bars on the top and bottom of the screen - however they won't be as large as they would have been on the old 4:3 screen (1.33:1)
If you look at the back of the movie box, somewhere it should list it's format ratio. (There are some that don't say however)
For example :
The Office Season 2 - 1.78:1
Ice Age the Meltdown - 1.85:1
These two don't have any black bars
Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest - 2.35:1
Cars - 2.39:1
These two do have the bars.
