I am able to pull HD off the old antenna in the attic. After I picked up the HD set I started looking at buying a HD antenna. Figured I'd give the one in the attic a try first. I was able to pull in every station except CBS 2 Chicago. After some searching I found that lots of people had this problem, but was able to find a solution to pulling it in.
I live about 14 miles from the broadcast towers in downtown Chicago so that's probably why it works for me. A good way to tell how well it would work would be to watch the analog broadcast for a bit. If there's any bit of snow or a ghost (as my analog CBS station had) then there will be problems receiving the digital signal with a standard antenna.
AntennaWeb.org is a good resource to see where the broadcast towers are around you and which ones broadcast in HD.
