This may or may not be an issue with her, but I was in the same boat, and my personal experience/problem was that at that age I didn't understand the connection between performance in high school (and even college) and the quality of life that I desired for my future.

It may be useful to ask her to identify what types of things she wants/plans to own. What type of house she will want, car she'll drive, etc. Kids that age (and even many adults that I meet), often don't make the connection between their actual performance in school/work and achieving the quality of life that they desire.

The first time that I had an inkling of the REASON everyone told me to do as well as possible in high school/college was about a year after I'd graduated with an undergrad engineering degree and had been working. I was helping my company prepare for a presentation that my company hosted on the Princeton campus. During that visit I literally bumped into Donald Sutherland while carrying something on a beautiful stone pathway (he expected me to move for him apparently and shouldered me, didn't realize who the jerk was that shouldered me 'till later). I also drove past Einstein's old house and was amazed. I'm 31 now and I still remember that moment when things sort of clicked.

All of that said, big schools often have satellite campuses with more lax admissions that feed very good and respected main campus'.

Have you toured any beautiful and great colleges to help her see the reason that she should do well if she can? There's also nothing wrong with a year or two of community college. There's also nothing wrong with not going to college. It all depends on whether she'll be happy with herself and her ultimate decisions in the future. Guidance at that age is so important because ultimate judgment and decision making skills are still developing. The fact that you wrote here means that she's lucky to have at least someone who values education and realizes the connections.
