She's probably just bored in school. People like that may just need a challenge and, unfortunately, find out after they missed the opportunity to go to a fancy school, etc. I would be more worried if she's smart but hanging around a bunch of dumb folks.

I am sorry that I cannot answer your question about college admissions. Maybe some extracurricular activities could sway the apparent lack of initiative? Sports, interesting hobbies, jobs, etc.
