The trick is to get a phone that's unlocked. If a phone is locked, one company's SIM card won't work in another company's phone. You can get all sorts of unlocked GSM phones, though, including some very cool foreign models, on eBay if you're interested in upgrading, but if you're with AT&T/Cingular, it's best to stick with one that was made for the US market because they use a frequency that's unique to North America. T-Mobile uses a standard international frequency, so their users can choose from a much broader range of phones.
