This is just the first, grown up, real life test to find out how money smart you are.
My opinion, since you asked, would be that money spent on your tired but low mileage 1988 9000T will go a lot further than the same amount of money spent on a newer car. Without knowing the details of what specifically is tired, this is what I'd consider first, and plan to live with that for two more years.
If you decide that that is impossible to do, I'd look to get a get a historically reliable 3 to 7 year old used car such as an Corolla/Civic/Golf, in the hopes that the newness and reliability will keep costs down.
Based on what you wrote, I would ask two questions:
First, are you serious about boomeranging so you can save cash, or is it to have cash to spend on a car? If you are deeply in debt and staying at home to save money, how will Mom and Dad feel if you can find the $ to buy (and maintain and insure) one of these instead of fixing what you have?
Second, call your insurance company and find out how much you'll pay to have a Viggen or M3 and to park it in Boston. Check on the cost of you 9000T also, just for fun. I'm assuming that you are no longer on your folks policy. 20 something males are not the lowest premium group.
Other than that, there is no one right answer that will fit everyone, but there is one right answer for you. You just need to be sure you are asking the right question.
