At work, they are replacing any dead monitors with the new widescreens. For many of the applications we use at the office, a widescreen would be useful if it would allow for more information to be seen left to right. Unfortunately, many of the programs (like Excel and some in-house applications) are just awkwardly stretched out; I have yet to be able to change the settings so I don't have to scroll left and right as much. Maybe there is a setting to fix this but I have yet to be able to find it as I think it's a program issue, not a monitor setting problem.
Like a lot of widescreen TVs that simply stretch out a normal picture making people look very strange, these new computer monitors just take up more space but don't really give anything back. Like you say, it's probably fine for watching movies and playing games, but for task related activity, I would prefer a normal 4:3 monitor.
