I was a little skeptical of widescreen monitors until my new computer showed up at work almost a year ago...someone had mistakenly ordered 21" widescreen monitors for a coworker and me rather than the cheapy normal one that I thought was going to show up.
It has taken a little getting used to, but now I wouldn't go back to anything other than possibly a dual-monitor setup. I usually run at the highest resolution (my eyes are young, so small icons etc aren't an issue) and I've never really had any space issues with the widescreen. The ability to have several windows at once open is great at work as well, as I can have excel, powerpoint and/or data analysis programs easily accessible to move things between files and reference things.
I bought a new thinkpad this past winter and that's widescreen as well. Quite possibly the best laptop-specific benefit of widescreen is that when I'm trying to work on an airplane tray table, the screen is short enough that I can open it up to a comfortable angle and not have it shoved into the seatback in front of me. It's also nice to be able to multitask on the smaller screen (14") with side-by-side windows. Plus it's great for movies (with widescreen movies, the viewing space on the laptop is bigger than my tv...).
