I think you'll find, like it or not, everything is going widescreen. I don't really think there is any computer-related usability improvement inherent in the design, but since entertainment displays are going widescreen it only makes sense that computers will as well.

As the penetration of these displays increases, be assured that software vendors will change interfaces to make use of them - I'm sure you've noticed that Microsoft products now stack windows to the side of the main application - click Help, sidebar pops up, click Bookmarks or Search and a sidebar pops up. Installed Vista? There's a sidebar with gadgets like Weather and Current Headlines that exists on the right side of the display. If you're into media editing, being able to keep all your tools off to the side and not overlapping your actual work product is a big benefit.

Things are still pretty 4:3-centric right now, but I think investing in a 4:3 monitor is really putting a damper on future usability. Paying extra for a dead design doesn't make a great deal of sense to me...
