Let's take our brand loyalty/favoritism out of it for a moment.
If farmers have a choice of growing corn for food or corn for fuel and the fuel crop puts more money in their jeans, which will they grow? Here's where other (non-food) crops simply *have* to come into the picture.
OTOH, there is only a limited distribution system for ethanol fuel. The 10% we often see at the pump is not biggie, but 85% and higher is. Plus the high % flavors don't deliver the same mileage as gasoline, so you use more of it. And it takes a lot of energy to turn vegetables into fuel. But it is "renewable," so what's the right choice? It's hard to say.
As far as using less fuel goes, I don't have a problem with hybrids (except for the fact they are boring to drive). And a hybrid that runs on a gas/ethanol mix would make a lot of sense. I'm waiting (and hoping)for something good from Europe, not Japan.
This whole thing is gonna get a lot crazier over the next few years. I'd love to see a discussion here if we can keep politics out of it.
