I am most likely behind the current news on this, but in the past I thought one of the negatives on (in the US at least) production of the ethanol was that the energy needed to create this came from natural gas. currently cheap and available, but basically borrowing from Peter to pay Paul if you follow. Natural gas is used in home heating and cooking, commercial eateries too, so why deplete one source to create another was the question. Again, this may all be dated information, perhaps we are using cow chips to create the energy to cook the corn into the grain alcohol now?
I suspect nothing by itself is the answer but it would seem that a renewable source of energy that doesn't use another would be good too. There are *many* areas of the country were Solar Energy on the individual homes could create both a smaller bill (or negative?) for the home owner, and lessen the need for more daytime energy too. I know that Saabnet is solar powered.
What if the states and the Feds too came back with those energy rebate programs of several years ago, perhaps spend some of the money used for the half dozen or so "new" energy sources they want to check out...
just a thought...
