And I grew up on a farm and was trained as a scientist. Ethanol is a gimmick to increase crop subsidies for farmers. It is not our salvation nor is it likely to ever be energy efficient to produce and transfer.
Until we develop hydrogen fuel cells or something similar to their full capacity (maybe ten years maybe two hundred years) we are with the "big oil" companies who are in spite of being heavily taxed making profits enough to pay back their shareholders and as importantly, to fund new research into new oil fields and new methods of extraction.
I haven't read all there is to know about shale extraction but from what I understand, if the price of fuel stays up, it is worth it to go after the energy in some of the shale fields.
Frankly, I am a member of the party with an R, but especially after returning from Europe, I hope to see $5 per gallon gas here in the states of which none of the increase goes towards taxes but goes towards developing new methods of extraction and energy usage. Not to mention what that would do to the horrid SUV and big cowboy pick-em-ups.
