....and it's not true that taking corn out of the food market is necessarily the biggest threat. We have an ethanol plant going in 10 miles East of us, and we are told it will "only" take 6 millions gallons of pure, potable water from the aquifer every day. Yeah. In the 1 million gallon pilot phase of this plant; later, it will use FAR more. It takes 6 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of ethanol. Five of the six gallons of water are effective waste, for heat dissipation. What these processes will exacerbate is the "sleeper" crisis that will far outstrip oil or other hydrocarbons: water. We are already in a perennial water crisis situation in the Southwest. Stretches of the East Coast have ground water that's unusable; Florida's ground water is being sucked out at a rate whereby the rate of salinization is moving inland more and more each year. In the Great Plains, wells have to be drilled down a half-mile or more to reach water, and more and more of this is highly mineralized. But I think we all get the picture......
