They say the money is not there to fix. Some people say "tax the rich, tax the Saab driver, not the Hyundai driver".
I say the fix is not that hard. On TV they said that bridge fixing would cost $55B. How many cars are there in the US? 200M? Do they drive 5,000 mi a year? At 20 mpg? If so, 250 gallons a year of gas.
200M cars X $100 is $20B. So if gas taxes were raised abotu 40 cents, you could pay for all the needed bridge repair in 2.5 years, which is faster than construction crews can do it. After 2.5 years, the money could pay for better roads.
So the solution is clear. 40 cent gas tax would do wonders for roads. Half of that or 20 cents per gallon gets all the bridges fixed in 5 years and then the bounty can go to roads.
