A lot of the responses in this thread seem to fall into two groups: 1) How can this happen," and 2) at least implied, "this shouldn't happen."
Answer to #1 is twofold: A) If poor design, and B) wear and tear.
Answer to #2 is "Oh yes, it should."
The female senator from MN, Ms. Klobuchar, remarked that "A bridge in America just shouldn't fall down," thus winning the August award for sheer disingenuousness. Oh yes it should. Within a day of the collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis, there were all sort of stories detailing how infrastructure of all sorts is crumbling away.
If we continue to pursue our penchant for building things quick and on the cheap (German autobahns are built about TWICE as thick as our Interstates- care to guess which will hold up longer?) the repair list will continue to lengthen and grow more expensive.
Since I believe that our political system is at virtual deadlock about projects like this, I would follow the advice of the earlier post that said to prepare for more, because it's coming.
