so the cats in my neighborhood are more like rodents than animals. there are 3-4 of them that have been allowed to roam around randomly for some time now. i was never that concerned about them until their presence impacted my yard, cars, and landscaping. they have set up camp in a couple of my flower beds and the stench of cat urine is strong and overpowering. they have been using the back yard as a litter box and unfortunately my dog needs constant supervision to keep him from eating the fecal material. there are bushes that have been matted down and killed as a result of the cats. i am finding what appears to be be cat puke all over the flower beds (it is an orange fungus looking thing with a dark brown powder inside). i also regularly find muddy cat prints on the hood and roof of the cars (including claw marks where additional traction was required). finally, since i dont have a garage, i had my 66 mustang convertible under cover in the driveway. apparently the cats liked the cover so much that they decided to use it as a scratching post and it is now useless as a cover. since it was around $200 i am not yet willing to purchase another scratching post for them at this point.
so my question is this, how can i keep them out of my yard? i am miffed to the point i am willing to hunt them down and dispose of them, but that does not seem like the "right" thing to do. they belong to a neighbor who thinks that the best thing for the cats is to roam at random. i have heard about bushes that can be planted, scents to spray in the area, noise devices, etc but i've heard differing levels of success with all.
i may be installing a sprinkler system at some point (next year), and i bet that will surprise them enough a few times to learn to stay out; but that does not help me in the short term.
lastly, this is a pretty tight-knit neighborhood so it is tough to play hardball with this cat neighbor as it will likely alientate us on the street. since i am not willing to spend the rest of our time in this house as an outcast, i am looking for other ways.
is there anything you can think of that might help me protect my hard work in the yard and the cars?
thanks in advance.
