SAAB and GM

Hi,
I'm hoping that someone will be able to answer a few puzzling questions for me. I own a 2004 SAAB 9-3 AERO (my second SAAB). I purchased my car overseas and went to the factory in Sweden to pick it up. I am constantly harassed and told that I'm driving a GM. Errh! So what is the real deal?
Did GM buy out SAAB or am I correct thinking it is a merger?
Though my car does have OnStar and is American spec, it was built in Trollhattan fall of 2003. I ordered it and it was one of the first to roll off the assembly line (or so I believe). So...how much of my car is Swedish and how much American? I understand that the OnStar system is American but is the chassy really a GM?
I'm interested in answers to these sort of questions so that when a conversation arises or I'm harassed I am armed with convicting information and facts. My husband, who of course loves to tease, has a 2007 Toyota built in California - no doubt about it. And he's fine with that. But if I'd wanted a GM, I would have bought one!
And lastly, yesterday I took my father-in-law to the Chevy dealer so he could look at a HHR. When the salesman opened the hood the first thing he said was that the ECOTECH engine was the same as the engine they've been using in SAABs for years. What?!!!!!!!!!
In short, I'm a gal who doesn't like generatics or counterfits. Do I have one?!
