I was just wondering, as I fly and drive places a lot, and find a lot of people have a 6-8 hour rule. I look at door-to-door (DTD) time and hassle factor. And if I have to connect someplace I will usually drive if the run is up to about 8 hours.
For example, I have clients in NYC and Rochester, NY. NYC is about 4.25 hours from my place in NH and Rochester is 6.5 hours. DTD to NYC, including airport time and getting from LGA to mid-town, is from 3.5 to 4 hours , so while possibly quicker it's a nuisance, and can take much longer. Also much more expensive. Flying to Roch means flying to Philly or LGA first, which is always a crap shoot and almost certain delays and takes the same time or more than driving. So I drive. Next month I have to go to Ottawa, a 6.5 hour ride, but longer on planes, so I'll drive that, too.
Cost is an issue, but clients pay for my mileage so it seems to work. So is time, but it's harder to work on planes than it once was, so I find I really don't lose much work time. I don't think of wear and tear much as highway miles are good miles for a car.
