I use the "8 hour drive or less, then I drive" rule.
With flying, you have to drive to the airport, (35 minutes for me), get there early to park, check in, go through security, and then wait through possible delays.
With driving, you might get stuck in traffic or delayed by somebody else's accident, but I would say the odds of a flight delay are really high. And things are out of your control and you are lied to about delays. With a layover, you might miss the next flight. Plus, when you drive, you have your car available once you get there and you don't have to rent a car if you need to drive.
Gasoline costs are higher now so depending on the flying deal, a flight might be cheaper. If you add wear-and-tear, depreciation, insurance costs and risk, then the decision becomes more complicated. Plus, when you fly, you can sleep during the trip. When you drive, you can't.
Here's a story... Once I flew to Boston from Detroit to visit my girlfriend at the time. It took me 11 hours from door to door by flying and getting shuttled to her apartment! I could have driven in 12 1/2.
