In general, if the drive is around 4 or 5 hours, I'll drive it. Unless it's out and back the same day, then I fly.
Figure:
30 mins to airport
90 mins wait
60 mins on the plane
60 mins tarmac/baggage/shuttle/rental car
That's 4 hours from home to in the seat of a rental car, then I have to head to the destination, assuming no delays. What's more, is on the return trip, I'm on the airline schedule.
I used to go Cleveland to Cambridge, ON (45 mins west of Toronto) weekly. I've done it over 50+ times. I only flew it probably 3 times for short trips. The biggest bonus was I could leave when the work was done on Friday, not when the airline had a flight. Early some weeks, later other weeks. Note, that was ALL with rental cars. Big bonus, my Canadian counterparts kept me set up with audiobooks on MP3 CD's. I "read" a lot of books doing that.
On personal travel, I will drive a bit further. Normally I split the driving with the wife, and I also don't need to buy 2 plane tickets. Personal trips normally involve a few days at the destination, so it's not like you feel like you're turning right around. Now we go SF to LA by car quite often. My wife flew it last week and she thinks next time she'll drive it. Same thing - flying doesn't save all that much time on a trip of that length. SF to San Diego would be a flight for me. Traffic from the northern reaches of LA to SD would probably take as long as the long leg of the trip.
