...At LL Bean, everything is returnable. You are returning NOT because the sole of the shoe wore out. You are returning because the stitching went bad.
Don't waste time with a telephone clerk. Ask for a supervisor, and ask for his or her name prior to initiating the conversation.
I have NEVER had a problem with LL bean. I bought a knapsack in 1992. I just called to ask if there was something that could be done about a bum zipper and about the waterproofing. I asked if I could pay to have the knapsack slightly repaired/refurbished. They offered instead to return my moneys or replace with a similar knapsack. I just wanted a repair, and they said that they would prefer to just refund moneys. In the end I paid for a repair locally because the knapsack is awesome and I don't want to return if for money. I mention their offer because it was LL Bean who floated the offer first. I did not ask for it.
I think you just got a bad telephone person.
