I've never had a problem, although we've never had the problem of something wearing out/failing too soon. However, a friend of ours sent back some boots for replacement because he thought they wore out too soon. These were outdoor hiking boots, he wore them hard, and they were over three years old. I thought that he was trying to take advantage - this guy spent 6 weeks a year at minimum doing serious wilderness hiking. Bean took them back with replacement, no problem.

Bean just opened a store near me (Manchester, CT), and while I was there a man was returning a pair of shoes he said were wearing too fast. The associate at returns (I was returning something the wrong size) took them back no problem - the only issue was they didn't have his size in stock, so they'd have to ship. The guy loved the shoes so much he didn't want to turn in the worn ones without getting a new pair! But no problem.

LL Bean will take a return with no problem, and do an exchange with absolutely no problem. You probably got a newbie. Just send them back with a letter asking for what you want (refund or exchange, and if exchange, size), and you'll get a new pair, or similar if they've stopped making it. Period.

I love LL Bean.
