The beauty of snow tires

Sunday morning, 10 AM. Heading up a 6% grade with maybe 2" of snow on the road, completely untreated by the crack road crews of the little rural town.
I come out of a side road and head up the hill in my 9K shod with Nokian WRs. It was a bit slick, but not really bad. The wheels spun in 1st so I hit 2nd and up I went; no biggie. Not so for the guy in the Accord 25 yards ahead. He's sliding all over, making about 2-3 mph, slithering along on the paved shoulder. I ease by him, giving him room, doing about 20 mph. He looks like he's dressed for skiing, looked he had his wife and a kid on board. He had over 1/2 a mile to go before the road flattened out and he hadn't reached the steeper part of that hill. I wonder if he made it, or just bailed out.
Snow tires make all the difference. I was thinking about that while I drove to the mountain yesterday. Getting up a slippery hill is one thing. Going down could be worse. And what about stopping and cornering? There are so many people who try to go through winter on all-seasons and think it's fine. After all, they (usually) get where they want to go. But they don't realize the advantage some decent winter tires give them in terms of capability, security and simple peace of mind.
Now maybe the guy can't afford a set of winter tires, or figures he's OK on all-seasons. I don't know. But the difference was so graphic between my car and his. It made me think of the ads from Tire Rack about "dressing appropriately" for the weather.
