Snow tires grip better in the colder weather than all season tires or especially summer tires. The reason to buy snow tires is not just for snow or ice, it's also for traction on dry yet cold pavement. It's a different rubber compound.

May I also suggest buying the steel wheels and mounting the snows on the wheels. When I bought my steel wheels from the Tire Rack, they were something like $35 each and very little for freight.

Steel wheels are imperative for several reasons. They increase the unsprung weight. You want that in the snow.

Steel wheels - who cares if they hit a curb or big rock or if the salt/chemicals harm the finish? They're cheap! $35 or ~$300 for a new alloy wheel.

And also, buy less wide tires and keep them inflated properly. You don't want to float on the snow. You want to dig down which more narrow tires will do along with increased unsprung weight.
