Most of the time here in eastern MA I don't need snow tires. When it does get snowy/icy/etc. it's easy to get around in either car (my 9-5 or my wife's Odyssey). The biggest thing for us is knowing that we can get where we need to be if there's a problem with our son at preschool, or me getting home from work, etc.

A story to illustrate my point: Last winter (the warmest in recent memory, I felt dumb on snow tires in 60 deg weather) on Valentine's Day there was a nasty ice storm that left a few inches of snow on top of thick ice on the roads. They were nearly impassable. Our 11-month old son was ill with norovirus and needed to get to the ER at 10PM - he was so severely dehydrated he would have lost consciousness by morning. The Odyssey was frozen to the road and I had to beat 2" of ice off the doors with my fist to get everyone into the car. The inexpensive snow tires (Viking SnowTech, not as hardcore as say a Nokian RSI but still quite good) got us to the ER without incident. There were no other cars on the road, not even plows, and the ER staff was surprised to see us since few people had managed to make it in due to the storm.

Peace of mind is worth $600 every 3-4 years in my book.

If you're not an aggressive summer driver, buy the Nokian WRG2 the next time you need tires, use 'em year round, and you'll have no trouble in a CT winter.
