Before I forget, the suburb that you may be considering is RIVERWOODS, not Riverside, which is a southwest suburb close to Brookfield Zoo.
You are in for some big sticker shock on housing prices in comparison to where you now are - the northern suburbs that you listed are fairly expensive, but not the very top. That said, they are very attractive places to live, great schools, etc. One rule here is that proximity to "the lake" (Lake Michigan) has a large effect on home pricing; Highland Park is on the lake. Note also that property taxes in Lake County (which includes Highland Park, Deerfield and Riverwoods) are typically much higher compared to Cook County (which includes Northbrook) for comparable houses - you need to figure this into your budgeting. Northbrook has a downtown area with some shops and a train station to go downtown - also known for some great recreation programs, i.e. the Velodrome.
Speaking of renting, this is a very good idea if you are new here and need to figure out what you are looking for. Do you have kids who will be attending schools? Do you want proximity and easy access to the city? Do you like living out in a countryside setting?
If your 92 cnvt is a turbo 5-speed, I may be very interested - shoot me an email on this and other questions.
