During the last decade there has been a significant shift from suburban living with offices also located in the suburbs, back towards urban communities. Most people don't realize that suburbs are a fairly recent trend (post WWII). I'm not saying that the suburbs will be abandoned, but a shift backi to cities and shorter commute times will be one of the many steps to reducing oil dependence.
Also, public transportation in the burbs generally does not make sense, but is very effective and efficient in an urban environment. Except for southern (hot climates) where you would hot to death while waiting for the bus or train.
