My thoughts:
Gas prices will top out. Once they went over $3.00 a gallon, the oil companies re-evaluated sources that were too cost prohibitive to extract in the past. Old wells are coming on line again in Texas. Canadians are starting to extract the oil out of their oil sands. New wells are being drilled all across the world. Russian investors are gearing up oil production in Siberia. This will keep stabilize the oil prices once the middle east sees competition. They may even lower their prices like they did during the last oil rush.
Lots of money will also be made exploiting the fears of the consumer. America is obsessed with extremist alarms. Some of what comes out of this will be good: electric cars, energy conservation, research, etc. Some will be bad: Price gouging, inferior goods promising things they can’t provide, and laws that restrict certain products and highly regulate them (feel good laws we’re already starting to see that drive cost up).
So, I hate to admit doing the un-pc thing, but I just bought a gas guzzling hot rod. I lived through the ‘70’s and saw these cars disappear as government regulations killed this kind of vehicle. So, I’m going to be to freakin old to enjoy the hot rod revival in another 30 years. I pick up my new M3 sedan tomorrow and plan on owning it a very, very long time……
