Shipping stuff across the country is easy. Trains haul a huge amount of freight very cheaply, even the diesel engined ones we use here. The problem is streamlining the process so they can move faster both between points and through the rail yards. Lots of new rail beds need to be laid. For trans-oceanic, ships are remarkably cheap per ton or freight carried.
I don't think we'll "go back in time a bit" but we'll use technology to work and live differently. However, we could change our ways of life. For example, not having all our food come from thousands of miles away. The current issue of salmonella in tomatoes would not happen if most of our food was locally grown.
As for work, I have a warped view because I work at home and my nearest client is 78 miles away. The next closest one is 385 miles and a company I do a lot with is entirely virtual. Technology enables this and I think we'll see more of it. Been doing this for 13 years. No biggie.
There is no one solution or answer, but many answers. We are entering a time of widespread societal change and things will be very different 10 and 20 years from now. Will they be better? Worse? Depends on your interpretation, I guess. It sure will be a helluva lot different.
But in the US, we really have to learn from other nations and lose this idea that if we didn't think of something it can't be good. The NIH (not invented here) Syndrome has to go away and we have to take a broad and long term view for how we can all live together, preferably with less of an impact on the planet.
We do indeed live in interesting times.
