I was in my apartment on W3rd st. in the Village putting my shoes on to make my 2 block walk to the office. NYU was building a new building at the time (now the student center) and I heard the first plane go right over my roof. My windows faced north so I looked out and saw all of the construction workers on top of the new building looking south with their hands on their hardhats yelling NOOOOOOOO.
I went outside and was stunned at the sight before my eyes; it was surreal, just like a horror movie. Women crying, strangers embracing trying to make sense of it. I passed a group of black teens and they said “everyone head uptown!!” and laughing cause they knew they would never attack Harlem. It was the only laugh I had that day.
After the second plane hit, I went to my office as I didn’t know what else to do; the office felt safe. I put Howard Stern on and heard that the Pentagon was hit. At that point I decided it was time to find my wife who was teaching in the building across the street from our apartment. Of course she was in class and oblivious to everything that was going on; NYU never cancels class, no matter what. She came home and we went and got money, food, etc. The supermarket was organized chaos. Say/think what you will but New Yorkers are the best.
I didn’t see the towers fall but I felt them both through my feet. We stayed in the City until Friday of that week; I wasn’t about to leave my home unless I was forced to evacuate but we weren't that close. We left our hometown for good in 2005, now happily residing in Austin.
