I saw the news on my tv at my apartment about the first plane, got to work on the 14th floor of GM's Renaissance Center Tower 400, saw my department people at Saturn marketing watching the TV. That's when I found out about the second plane. Many of us thought that we might be targeted since we were in the tallest buildings in a major city like Detroit. It was nerve-racking. At first we were told it was optional to go home, and it took me an hour to get home. I found out later that they made it mandatory for all employees to go home.
I was supposed to meet up with a friend for dinner that evening to celebrate her birthday two days earler, and we canceled. It really did seem brighter and sunnier than normal that day without the contrails from airliners.
The next few months were really hard for me as an Indian-American who looks Middle Eastern to some extent. I really felt stares from others that made it seem like I was somehow partially responsible for the terrorists' actions. My life has changed ever since.
