About a mile away. I had an early class. In between that and a lab in the same building the first plane hit. I heard about it and figured it was some sort of accident. The lab class which went on because no one knew school had been closed. The TA went up to the roof and reported what was going on.

Things looked very different from the ground level. You couldn't see the full magnitude shown in the skyline footage, but there was a sea of people covered in debris heading north. I walked to within about 1/2 mile of the site. It was impossible to get much closer and the air as terrible.

I was stuck for a few hours. I took one of the first running subways that went almost under the west edge of the site. You could see into the adjoining subway station closer to the site. The subway station was destroyed, the subway stopped there crushed, and daylight shining through. The air was shut off as the train crawled through that area.

Just as those of us that have watched Katrina and other events around the world, you can't imagine how long it takes to repair the infrastructure damage. The streets down there were a mess for a long time afterwards. Everything had to be repaved. The soot was stuck like glue to everything. I would bet some building on close examination still have some residue. I had an older family member get sick just from going to a store in the area (about 1500 ft from the edge of the site) several months afterwards. They coughed up black mucus and were sick for a few days.

I personally was not that surprised by the event itself. Anyone who was in NY in 93 and has even the slightest understanding of a terrorist mind knew this or something similar was inevitable, given we did little to stop it.

Similarly, Katrina/I-35W Bridge/etc. were also inevitable, given we did little to stop them. It is all part of American shortsightedness that goes back at least to Pearl Harbor and maybe even before WWI. Luckily, we learn quickly, but we pay the price economically and in life and property.

Not much slows down New Yorkers, but that was a slow period. It still has a lot of impact in the local community, due to both those that were lost and the many that were directly involved in the aftermath.

The real questions are would you work in the new tower going up and where is the next thing we're not prepared for going to happen?
