I had a 42" Panasonic plasma for ~ 5 years when one of the internal circuit boards failed- not the screen. Because no new parts are available I bought a new TV and stayed with the plasma (bigger and 1/3rd the old price!)
First- stand and look side-by-side you will be hard pressed to see a radical difference among any in the showroom- they're all pretty good.
Plasma does have blacker blacks- probably more useful for movies
Plasma has always had faster response times so fast images (sports) do not get blurry. The LCD have improved substantially over last several years.
Expected life span is decades of typical viewing- not an issue. "Burn-in" of image has been resolved as an issue.
1080P is an investment in the future. The only source of that signal is BluRay- so the selection is limited. Broadcast, cable, DVD etc all have lower density signal. That may change in the future, but I have sensed very little industry interest in the next level of investment.
Look at, but do not buy yet, the next leap in TV- the Organic LEDs or OLEDs
Cruise CNET for more info than you want.
