So the seatbelt retractor failed. It's a mechanical device, it can happen. It could have been defective, or been damaged when the car rolled and the door frame distorted, whatever. No car can possibly protect passengers in every conceivable accident.
It appears the driver was doing something stupid, apparently panicked, and wanted compensation for his injuries despite the fact he was being a bonehead and lacked driving skill.
I don't think this is any reflection on Saab, as Saabs have overwhelmingly shown themselves to be very safe cars in real world accidents. The driver and his ambulance chaser were clearly looking for a way to get paid for being stupid. I can guarantee you the owner's manual was carefully scrutinized after the accident, in search of a loophole.
