Not cool, dry, or deterioration-free Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 24 Dec 2008 18:59:13 In Reply to: About speed......, Herb Hirsch [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 24 Dec 2008 13:35:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The trunk of a car is not a nice place - I wouldn't want to spend much time there. It gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It gets lots of condensation - that's why there are drain holes in the trunk. Yes, there is no ultraviolet. But there is ozone and oxygen. Both break down the rubber in the tires. I've got old tires that have been sitting in my garage, away from the sun and in relatively stable temperatures, and they're dry-rotted.
For a mini-spare, I'd inspect it carefully. If the rubber looks smooth and shiny, as new, then it's probably OK. If you see lots of fine cracks and the surface is chalky, I'd worry that the rubber has broken down. Yes, a trunk is better than on the road where it gets wear and UV. My guess is a trunked-spare is good for 6-8 years, but I'd inspect it carefully.
