Our well was pounded 8 years ago, but the machinery was very old (and so was the guy who did it). Pounding takes several days. The action of the pounding opens up cracks and lets water into the well all the way down. Drilling creates rock particles that are forced into the cracks and prevent water from coming into the well. Casing goes down to the bedrock only. There are three pounded wells in our neighborhood (2 acre lots) and 15 drilled wells. The pounded wells (all 8 years old) are all around 150', the drilled wells (8-20 years old) are all 500-700'+. There are not very many people who pound wells anymore, but I would not have it done any other way. I don't recall the cost, but since it is priced by the foot, a 150' well is cheaper than a 600' well no matter how you figure it. The other advantage is that the 150' water rarely has to be treated, the deep well water has to be treated for various issues.
