people still buy 'Yotas. Sonatas maybe aren't quite as "good" but they do the job and cost a lot less. People also buy what they can afford and what they think offers the best value.
Cars, as Ari and others note are kinda complex. They require heavy manufacturing, not light manufacturing as is done with PCs and consumer electronics. The scale is vastly different, and far more technologies come into play. Dell got started in a dorm room. Try starting a car company that way! Maybe you could start as a guy in a garage in 1909, but not now.
There are a myriad of parts in a car that are essentially the same as those in other cars, but the differences are what becomes very important. It's more than having the same starter or alternator on lots of makes and models. Take seats, for example. I find the seats in Toyotas to be totally miserable. And I don't like they way they ride, feel or handle. But if you made a 'Yota handle and go like a Saab Aero I still wouldn't want it because the seats are so bad.
As in most things, it's the details that count. I'm sure the car industry could be much more efficient, but I wouldn't want all cars to be basically the same.
